Without a Prescription
Baclofen is prescribed for treating spasm of skeletal muscles that cause muscle clonus, rigidity, and pain due to multiple sclerosis.
Baclofen is prescribed to patients who are experiencing some of multiple sclerosis' unpleasant symptoms:
- Stiffness;
- Spasm;
- Muscle pain;
Warnings
Before you start taking Baclofen, you should alert your personal physician if you have any allergic reactions to:
- Dyes;
- Foods;
- Other drugs or any other type of substances;
- Preservatives;
If you have:
- A history of blood clots or stroke;
- Kidney disease;
- Seizure disorder (such as epilepsy);
Overdose
The symptoms of an overdose with Baclofen should include:
- Coma or fainting;
- Drowsiness;
- Muscle weakness;
- Pinpoint or dilated pupils;
- Shallow or weak breathing;
- Vomiting;
Side Effects
Baclofen may cause:
- Confusion;
- Constipation;
- Dizziness;
- Drowsiness;
- Headache;
- Inability to sleep;
- Increased urinary frequency or urinary retention;
- Low blood pressure;
- Nausea;
- Respiratory depression;
- Seizures;
- Vomiting;
- Weakness;
Abrupt discontinuation of oral Baclofen may cause seizures and hallucinations.
Abrupt discontinuation of intrathecal Baclofen may result in:
- High fever;
- Muscle rigidity;
- Rebound spasticity;
- Rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown);
- Aching muscles;
- Breathing difficulties;
- Confusion;
- Dizziness;
- Drowsiness;
- Dry mouth;
- Feeling sick;
- Headache;
- Increased need to pass urine;
- Light-headedness;
- Mood changes;
- Problems with eyesight;
- Shakiness;
- Sleeplessness or nightmares;
- Sweating and skin rash;
- Tiredness;
- Unsteadiness;
- Weakness;
Alert your physician if you are experiencing allergic reactions:
- Swelling of your face tongue lips or throat;
- Hives;
- Breathing difficulties;
Stop your treatment with Baclofen if you have these severe side effects:
- Uneven heartbeat;
- Seizure (convulsions);
- Hallucinations;
- Confusion;
Alert your physician if you have these more common and less dangerous side effects:
- Constipation;
- Dizziness;
- Drowsiness;
- Headache;
- Nausea;
- Sleep problems (Insomnia);
- Tired feeling;
- Weakness;
Contraindications
Baclofen is contra prescribed if you have any of the following conditions:
- If you are over 65 years of age;
- If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding;
- If you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines;
- If you have breathing problems;
- If you have ever had a stomach ulcer;
- If you have ever had a stroke or know you have cerebrovascular disease (thickening of the blood vessels to the brain);
- If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine;
- If you have kidney problems or an 'overactive' bladder;
- If you have mental health problems;
- If you suffer from epilepsy, Parkinson's disease or diabetes;
Form.
Tablets: 10 milligrams,
Tablets: 20 milligrams.
Intrathecal: 0.05 milligrams/ milliliters,
Intrathecal: 10 milligrams/5 milliliters,
Intrathecal: 10 milligrams/20 milliliters.
Dosage.
The usual starting dose of Baclofen for adults is 5 milligrams given three times daily. Based on the response, the dose can be increased gradually every three days to a maximum of 80 milligrams/day in several doses.
